the capital and largest city of Japan, and its main financial and business centre. Population: 13,010,279 (2010). Tokyo is known for being one of the largest and busiest cities in the world.
the capital of Japan, a port on SE Honshu on Tokyo Bay (an inlet of the Pacific): part of the largest conurbation in the world; major industrial centre and the chief cultural centre of Japan. Pop (Tokyo– Yokohama metropolitan area): 38 001 018 (2015 est)
[conurbation]
a group of towns that have spread and joined together to form an area with a high population, often with a large city as its centre
A conurbation consists of a large city together with the smaller towns around it.
