ファミレスとかに行くと、よく「ハンバーグプレート」というようなメニューがあります。
この場合のプレートは「皿」ですね。でも、「皿」といったら他にもいくつか思い浮かぶはず。
今日はこれを見てみましょう。
まずは plate から。

次に dish の説明文を英英辞典から出してみます。ちょっと比べてみましょう。

dish の方には少し深さがあり、plate はほぼ平らという感じですね。
スープが入りそうなのが dish で、ライスやパスタが乗っているのが plate ですかね。
さて、英英辞典には see also bowl とありました。
これも見ておきましょう。

いわゆるボウルはボウルなのですが、dish との違いを意識しながら読んでみてください。
イメージとしては・・・シリアルをミルクと一緒に食べるときに使う皿ってところでしょうかね。

こちらは plate の一種ですから、ほぼ平らなのですねぇ。ただし、カップを乗せる皿ということで、コーヒー皿のような皿のことです。
そういえば、空飛ぶ円盤は flying saucer でした。
