さて、今日の「これはどこのことでしょう？」はこれです。
a city and port in California, US. It is a very beautiful city, built on hills next to a bay (=an area of sea that curves inwards towards the land) on the Pacific Ocean. Its famous areas include Chinatown, where many people live whose families originally came from China, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the prison island of Alcatraz. The city is close to the San Andreas fault, and was almost destroyed by the great earthquake and fire of 1906.

ま、読めるところだけでも読んでみましょう。
まず、カリフォルニアにある街なんですね。
で、とってもきれいな街で、港に面した丘に作られているのですが、その港は太平洋に面しています。
bay については、横浜ベイスターズなんていうのがありますからお馴染みですね。
一昔どころか二昔くらい前に「悲しい色やね」という歌がヒットしましたが、その中に「大阪ベイ ブルース」という節が出てきました。初めて聞いたとき、「大阪にベーブルースみたいな人がいるのか？」と思った人も多いはずです。
ま、それはともかく、bayの説明がカッコの中の斜体の部分です。
ここまでが前半です。
で、後半にはチャイナタウンが有名だとか書いてありますが、ヒントになるのはその次の the Golden Gate Bridge と the prison island of Alcatraz です。
ゴールデンゲートブリッジとアルカトラズといえば、もちろん「サンフランシスコ」ですね。
ということで、答がわかってしまったのですが、最後に一文残っています。

サンフランシスコは San Andreas fault に近くって、1906年の大地震によってほとんど破壊された・・・とあります。
20年ほど前にも大きな地震がありましたが、fault ってなんでしょう？
通常であれば欠陥とか失敗とかという意味ですが、ちょっと英英辞典を開いてみるとこんな説明文があります。

A fault is a large crack in the surface of the earth.
(COBUILD)
crack というのは「裂け目」のことです。
地表の裂け目・・・ということで、これは「断層」のことです。
奇しくも、どちらの辞書にも例として San Andreas fault が出ていました。
1906年の地震も1989年の地震も、この断層のズレがきっかけだったそうです。
日本と同じく、地震対策が必要とされている都市なんですね。
